The society was founded in 1989 in Stockholm by five Björling-enthusiasts:
the record producer Frank Hedman with several Björling-releases on the label Bluebell of Sweden, Harald Henrysson, then record librarian and now curator of The Jussi Björling Museum in Borlänge, Bertil Bengtsson, who in his native town Gothenburg had already produced a Björling exhibition, John Erik Eleby, opera-singer at The Royal Opera in Stockholm, choir conductor and Lars Hemmingsson radio man and chairman of the board 1995-2004.

		The society has seven honorary members: Jussi´s children Lars Björling, Anders Björling, Ann-Charlotte Björling, the Swedish Royal Court Singers Hjördis Schymberg, Ragnar Ulfung, Erik Saedén, Elisabeth Söderström, Kerstin Meyer, Kjerstin Dellert, Nicolai Gedda and Harald Henrysson, curator of The Jussi Björling Museum in Borlänge, Raymond Björling, Dan Shea
		The society has nearly 600 members all over the world showing how internationally well-known and popular Jussi Björling was and still is so many years after his death in 1960. The society arranges meetings related to Jussi Björling and promotes the art of singing in his spirit. At these meetings we have as guests many of Jussi´s singer colleagues. We also try to inform the members about the music and opera life during Björling´s career and today. We publish an illustrated newsletter twice a year and news bulletins.
		The annual membership fee is SEK 200 for singles and SEK 250 for families. The Scandinavian Jussi Björling Society co-operates with Björling societies in Great Britain and USA and also with The Jussi Björling Museum in Borlänge, through which the members can buy records, videos and books at reduced prize. Lists of items for sale are continuously published for the members.
		In Stockholm we co-operate with The Royal Opera and Folkoperan and their friend-societies. This co-operation has resulted in several great memorial concerts 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003
